EARLY! –Happy Candy Freaks

October 30, 2008

oldorangstmppumDue to uncontrollable extenuating (and other large words I can’t think of) circumstances. We had to do our annual WHOLE FAMILY DRESS UP, last weekend.

Here are the results:

He totally came up with the whole Joker costume from Goodwill Stores. A teenager came up to us at one point during the community carnival and said: “Dude where did you buy your costume, THAT’s what I want to be!” Sorry. Not a ‘ready-made’ costume here. You are looking at a professional costume designer, sorry. (Oh Yeah!)

Green Power Ranger is so happy to wear that dang cape! We found it at a garage sale for $1! Big sister also found her perfect Piratess costume at Goodwill. Little sister used the large bin of Halloween Costumes past, as did BatMama.

Total cost for costumes this year? About $20. We rock.

Oh if I could figure out my DANG scanner I would sooo share the photo we had taken of the two of us on Harleys! Now that was awesome.

I can’t wait to see everyone else’s Halloween Costumes…Happy Haunting! (And safe.)

(If you hurry they’re only $20.) I can’t wait to see her President’s Day Diggs. Oh Oh? Valentine’s! Did I forget Groundhog Day? Who wants a header with a rodent on it?

She’s very nice. And you’ll love her designs. And I hear she is taking custom orders again…better hurry and get on her list, it get’s longer than Santa’s…

And if you’d be so kind. When you get there. Will you remind her that she promised to ‘figure’ out Twitter with me? She’ll need this link as a reminder that TONIGHT is the Newbie Night on Twitter. Yup. If you want some help figuring it out, with just a few friends, join me on around 7PM Pacific. 10Pm Eastern. The tag is #GNOnb, my username is @Rogbark.

Mama Got New Jeans…

October 29, 2008

I did.

The good kind. NOT the kind where you fork over more than would buy two boxes of Costco Diapers.
The kind that you can wear every day. Wear IN. Make a mess of, throw in the laundry, wear the next day -rinse and repeat.

I had a pair like this. I wore them out. To holes. Plus. They didn’t fit anymore. Sad huh? They were all baggy in the butt? The what? I know..where did my butt go? I had to wear a belt? That’s impossible isn’t it? They stretched out right? Oh RI-AAAAght, that must be it. All the spandex.

So I shopped. At Old Navy for fancy pants sake. And THOSE Jeans didn’t fit either. Huh?

My size, the size I’ve been for 4 years? Was TOO large. Again with that…
TOO large.

I had to try on the size SMALLER. Yeah, RI-aaaght?

I wasn’t this size in HIGH SCHOOL people. Much less after three babies?

We call this the secretary syndrome. The stores are now sizing things so they appear to be smaller? Hubby’s secretary from eons ago, would walk into office and proclaim, OH MY HECK, look at my new outfit! It’s an 8! When the poor lady hadn’t been anywhere near a size 22 for the past 22 years. Much less an 8?

A Marketing Lie. Must be. Ri-aaaght?

You tell me.

SHARE YOUR WordFul over at ANGIE’s Circus!!

PS. From comments, this phenom is called “Vanity Sizing”! —Mamarazi
Oh my heck, I didn’t know it had a name?

It’s a love hate thing.

Have you read Twilight?

I did. I was totally obsessed. Read the book and THEN read the whole Stephanie Meyers website. If I had seen the mass Edward shirts? I would have bought one. I would have dressed up as Edward for Halloween for Pete’s sake.

I read the second book.

Um? Not so good. And when I realized it wasn’t ending? And all that stuff about Jacob…NO…Edward….NO…? Oh brother. Not for me. I did read the third one, but only barely. Oh let me guess there’s going to be a 4th book. No thanks. Just KILL her off already!

I guess it’s like sexual angst, only it’s Should I Kill her instead of the whole virginity issue? Blah?

Convince me? The Fourth one…Or not?

October 26, 2008

You have to imagine at the next pot luck function, some sort of uber yummy goodies, transported in my new uber cool ‘warming’ bowl with matching lid and spoon!

I know. I’m such a geek. But THIS has been my dream. To make Jello from a mold…

How cute is this? Do I love orange? Yes. Do I love NOT using Ziplocks for kid lunches? Yes!

Wanna take a stab at WHAT all THIS is?

I’ll just tell ya..
I got a wild hair a few weeks back, when a friend mentioned how much she loved one of the bags I had made. (She even sorta kinda matched her blog to the fabric of that bag…!)

I thought to myself…
How ’bout a trade?
New idea to me anyway?

And even though it took me a while to get caught up enough to get her that bag…
YES. All those items above?
Who knew it was so cool these days?
They were like little prizes for ‘trading’ something a lot like this:

Even better? She’s hosting a giveaway….go see…!

A Twitter Tale

October 24, 2008
I moved.

All that was covered in previous posts.
(You remember the high-centered moving truck right?)
(In case your forgot.)

When I moved. I didn’t know anyone in my new town. But I still had all of you. My little online world. But talking to you through your blogs, or emailing you and waiting for you to get back to me, was taking too long. And for a long stretch there I had no adult interaction.

IT all started when I asked a couple online friends to join me on Twitter so I could chat with them sorta kinda live? I worked out a time late one evening when all three of us could be online, and they slowly grasped how Twitter does it’s thing. They each had that head smacking moment where you GET Twitter and go: “Oh my gosh, this is soooo easy! Why did it take me so long to get here?”

We had a blast. And we thought we were so cool.
We agreed.
For sure the next week…

Same time-Same place.

And my friends?
Twitter Girl’s Night Out was born.
It was bald of course. (All my babies are.)

There were about 15 gossiping gals that next week. And over 50(!) the third week. I called in a massive favor to relative new-comer to the blogging world: Jyl, Ms. MommyGossip herself. I said, hey? This is bigger than I know what to do with! Help!

And look where we are now? I can’t even find a way to tell how many amazing tweeters join in on Tuesday nights? 75, 150, more? But we tweet at a blazin’ 300 tweets per minute, and I expect that to RISE!

This thing needed it’s own HOME.
The new. The fabulous. The very real #GNO website.
For all things Twitter GNO.

So what’s next for my baby?

mom's bald baby picture
(Not my baby. This is JoyGant’s mom.)

You know you want some…

October 23, 2008

I took THESE to book club last week.

Yes. I do get out. I see real women at real GNOs. What book for book club?

I have no idea.

The grown up girly food froze my brain.

Apparently the deal is to OUT-do each other with the treats you bring to book club, and then no one will care that you didn’t read the book, even though you claimed to have read it a hundred years ago in Jr. High. (Who would do that?)

There was this homemade 7layer dip with REAL guac in it. The kind where you walk away from the tray with 3/4ths of it on your plate, and go? Oops. How did SO much of that get on my plate? Oh well, no one wants to eat it if I put it back right?? So yeah, I ate all of that. AND another sweet mom there had gotten all Martha on us and brought these cute little puff balls of chocolate cupcakes with giant marshmallow heads and chunks of chocolate bars for garnish. (Literally. She used a Martha recipe she confessed. The little devil.)

Oh. And HOMEmade Hot chocolate. Did you even know you can MAKE hot chocolate? As in NOT from a metallic packet? Yeah, and whipped cream with cinnamon sprinkled on top.

After all that?
So much for my now not -so-amazing:

Chocolate Cheesecake Pumpkin Bars

Just in case you’d like to try these? (And there were one or two–or 18– twitter friends who said they did….) The recipe seems intimidating. But so did Twitter at first right? It’s easy, just follow in steps. (And USE parchment paper…many a frickin swear word avoided via Parchment.)

2.5 C Graham Crackers–crushed
1/2 C Sugar
1 C Melted Butter
–mix well and set aside

3) 8 oz PKGS. Cream Cheese (softened)
2 2/3 C Sugar
4 Eggs
1 1/2 C Pureed Canned Pumpkin
3/4 tsp. Pumpkin Pie Spice
3/4 tsp. Vanilla
1/4+ tsp. Salt
–6 Oz. chocolate chips (I used semi-sweet)
3 Tbls. Butter

2 C Sour Cream (yes the real stuff)
1/3 C Sugar

There are 4 layers total. So we’ll have 4 steps to get to those layers, eh?

Step One:

Lightly grease 15×9 pan for crust (here’s where the parchment comes in handy, I spray the parchment a bit!) Press cracker mixture in the bottom and set aside.

PreHeat oven to 325 degrees

Step Two:

Filling. In large bowl beat together cream cheese & sugar. Add eggs one at a time on low speed. Stir in the pumpkin, spice, vanilla & salt.
—Pour 2 Cups of this Pumpkin mixture into another bowl and set both bowls aside. (There’s a lot of asides in this.)

Step Three:

In small saucepan over very low heat melt chips and butter while stirring. Remove from heat. Add the reserved 2 cups filling to this chocolate-y mixture. Stir till smooth.

Spread the chocolate/pumpkin batter carefully over the graham crust. Bake for 15 min. Remove from oven and slowly pour the other bowl of filling over this partially cooked chocolate layer. Bake another 40-50 minutes. Until the edges slightly puff up and the center is set. (Don’t over cook, a little wiggle-y in the middle is fine.) Remove from oven and cool for 30 min.

Step Four:

Topping. Meanwhile, combine sour cream and 1/4 C sugar and let stand until cheesecake pan is cool. Then spread sour cream mixture over filling. Refrigerate for several hours or overnight. Keep refrigerated.

Cut into squares and then cut squares into diagonals for the Martha factor.
I honestly can’t remember where I came across this recipe. So if’ it’s your great aunt Edna’s tell her I’m sorry for stealing it?

Oh. And this makes a ton. Taking half the pan into your husband’s office tends to get lots of …ahem…cheesecake points. (Ask me how I know.)

GNO: Have Van Will Travel

October 20, 2008
100_7612 100_7608

We decided a few years ago…taking a vacation without the kids?

No fun.

Lining up the childcare, making grandma keep up with their schedules, worrying?

It was all a nightmare, and by the second night away? I wished the kids were WITH us. Seeing the ancient volcano, trying out snorkeling, tasting an authentic dish.

100_7627 100_7640

100_7648 100_7687

We’ve also learned that the HOTEL POOL is usually more fun than any vacation activities. So we found that staying in a condo with a pool and with a kitchen cuts down on our travel costs. And airfare for 5 is out of the question.. so we find places within a 15 hour drive. The kids are troopers and make it in one shot now.

This is outside our Hotel in Palm Desert last winter.
(That would be near Palm Springs, one town removed).

100_7854 100_7866

We rode the tram, cuz the guide book said it was a no miss. But in our opinion the ridiculously high priced ticket with the snow and cold at the top and the fancy lunch prices NOT fun for kids, and WORTH missing…

100_7900 100_7991

However the awesome walking trails nearby? Oh my gosh, soooo beautiful. The kids had a blast, and it looked like we were walking in an alien forest!
And meeting up with friends from New Jersey in California? Seriously cool.

Whatdya think? Christmas Card worthy?

kids group 1

And outside the children’s museum…
These are vacations WORTH taking the kids along!
