Overheard 2

March 31, 2008

TK: Dad, where’s my cup?
Dad: What cup?
TK: The one so I can do magic! (you have to imagine this in a ‘duh’ voice)

Later that morning TK was stirring his ‘magic rocks’ in the cup and telling everyone that he was making a ‘magic’ potion. (The funny thing is that he believes he’s making something truly magic!)

Another one.

TK to friend: Hey I’m sick (he wasn’t), I’m going to lay down on the couch. (to watch a movie)
Friend: Yeah, I’m sick too. (he wasn’t)
TK: Then you can come up here and cuddle with me.
Friend: Okay! (and he did, got right under the blanket with TK)

Now, this was two (nearly) 4 year old boys, what’s more precious than that?

One more.

We were teasing TK about his birthday. It went something like this:

Mom: Hey buddy should we have a party for your birthday?
Dad: Yeah, but then we won’t have any presents, okay?
TK: (After a pause) Awww! I want presents.
Mom: Well….okay a few maybe.
TK: I don’t waaaant a feewww!
Mom: Oh? How many do you want? (wrong question mom)
TK: (lickety split no hesitation) A MILLION AND ONE!

Even the sisters laughed at that.

Here’s part two of the bags I worked on over the weekend. I added thin interfacing to this one (it’s for my other sister’s birthday).

Hey, since I’m all into bags these days…go check out the
zosephine diaper bag you can win it on I especially like the tiny pocket under the flap but on the outside…hmm I wonder if I could figure out how to make a pocket like that?

Music Musings

March 31, 2008

The first two are songs I’ve been hearing a lot on the radio (all that back and forth TO school, FROM school–TO dance, FROM dance–you know the drill).

The last one I threw in because we finally saw JUNO (it was my hot birthday date).

(Music is on the playlist on the right)

Random Weekend Doings

March 29, 2008
For my sister’s birthday:
She picked out these two fabrics and I made her a little tote! I wasn’t sure how much fabric to buy, because I wasn’t sure how big the tote wanted to be. After sketching it out, I have enough to make two more! It measures about 12″wide by 9″high.

It is completely reversible. And (a bonus) the little pocket holds a cell phone perfectly!

Well, my new internet friends? What do you think? Would you buy one of these? For now I’m just making them as gifts (don’t have enough gutz yet to try sales…) Watch out Etsy, I’m dreaming. I want to make a bag out of This fabric from Jessica Jones next…

And to complete the randomness. I’ve named this ‘Snowy’ my little daffodil.

Would you like to try…

Blueberry Nut Oat Bran Muffins?

I made up a batch of these after kids had gone to bed a few nights ago. I changed the recipe a little. I was looking for a terrific oat bran recipe where I could use my frozen blueberries (I froze them myself-so no extra sugar/syrup) and bottled pear sauce(I helped make this at a local cannery). I followed this recipe from with only a few changes.
I used 1 cup pear sauce (it’s more liquid-y than applesauce), and I substituted whole wheat pastry flour for the white flour. Also instead of the oatmeal topping I used a bit of Grape Nuts cereal. And believe me, once these come out of the oven…you get over the fact that they are made with OAT Bran! (I ate 3 on the spot–so much for healthy). I froze about half of them and they were yummy after thawed.

Overall. Your kids will hate ’em. (Oh darn, more for me eh?) But they are sweet enough and have an okay texture in a ‘bran muffin’ sort of way.

  • 1 1/2 cups oat bran (seems like a lot, but persevere!)
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (changed to ww.)
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar (I would cut this down next time, the pear sauce has sugar added)
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/8 cups applesauce (I used pear sauce)
  • 1/2 cup egg substitute
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil (I was out of this, used vegetable)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups blueberries
  • 1/4 ounce chopped pecans
  • 1/2 cup low fat granola

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Line a 12 cup muffin pan with paper muffin liners, and spray liners with cooking spray.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the oat bran, flour, brown sugar, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. In a separate bowl, blend the applesauce, egg substitute, canola oil, and vanilla extract. Thoroughly mix the applesauce mixture into the flour mixture. Fold in the blueberries and pecans. Spoon the batter into the prepared muffin cups. Sprinkle batter with granola, and press granola lightly to make it stick.
  3. Bake 18 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a toothpick inserted into a muffin comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack.

My oven is funny so I cook muffins at 375 deg. But a little tip…heat oven to 350 deg. and then up it to 375 when you put the muffins in the oven. (Something about the burst of heat activating the baking powder–Alton Brown tip).

Remind me to blog about my latest non-diet, diet. These muffins? Totally fine to eat with all that bran and whole wheat and fruit and brown sugar. (I’ve lost 4 pounds in under 2 weeks–and believe me these were 4 pounds that have eluded removal for 2 solid years. And they came off with no extra excercising!)

A Painful Glimpse

March 26, 2008
I was going to post about my birthday… but that’s bo-ooor-ing
I’m ranting.

Where is the pot-lickin‘ TAPE?

And don’t tell me you can see it there in the front of the drawer. No.

Because that tape. The one clearly marked Mom’s is GONE. I mean you only want tape

When. You. Need. It.

And just in case you think I’m tidy enough to only have one junk drawer…

Oh no. I have three.

What’s that? No one says Pot-Lickin’? When the dog was naughty my Grandfather would yell and say, “you little POT-LICKER”! And sometimes that’s exactly the right phrase to describe my sweet kids.

Happy Birthday to me.

What I want for my birthday….part 4

March 26, 2008

I would truly love a set of these:
And of course if I have those I will need a new pair of these:

But you understand by now… all I’m really getting this year is…..

Isn’t it nice? It’s just what I’ve always wanted. And really it costs very little to obtain. For the person who’s hard to shop for? The perfect gift.

This, this, and this are also on my list.

When Kids Cook

March 25, 2008

Do I need to write anything at all? Fifthgrader loves, loves, LOVES to cook, especially out of fun cookbooks like:

Roald Dahl’s Even More Revolting Recipes

This is called ‘A Plate of Soil with Engine Oil’.

And 7yrold, loved, loved, LOVED eating it.

Oh. My. Yummy. Avocado. Sprout . Sandwich!

March 25, 2008
This sandwich was nowhere near as good looking as this.
But I kinda think it looked pretty good.
And whoa. It tasted fabulous.

I didn’t put these on my sandwich, but I threw in the picture anyway, to show how the beet dyed eggs turned out for Easter.

Flat Stanley-ette

March 24, 2008
7yrold has a Flat Stanley project…

She did the paper-doll dress-up all herself, I was seriously impressed (I drew the basics of the facial features) but otherwise it was all her. It’s off to Sunny San Diego for this Stanley-ette.
